As per usual the first day of brightess brought a little tougher fishing for some of the bigger fish, but all in all pretty darn good. Today should prove to be more what you are looking for. Little bug game in the morning and hoppers in the afternoon is usually a good play this time of year.

The fish feeding on top this time of year can be very subtle, a smaller dimple on the surface of the water could be a giant fish. That said, be easy on your hook sets especially when you are fishing the smaller Trico patterns with light tippets! For Terrestrials we like using Ants, Beetles and Hoppers.

The blackfoot gave up some solid fishing during the first sunny day, things could only be better during the following days. Look forward to cooling temps and clouds to come.

Try Fishing Terrestrials....Ants, Beetles and Hoppers!

Mixed review came from this past sunny day. Look for more solid fishing today and the following too. Same bugs apply.

There are finally enough Hoppers around to keep your fishing real interesting right now. While large patterns will likely catch fish try using smaller ones too. Try using red, pink or black colors too, these colors can sometimes really make the fish move to the fly....why? dunnno.

Both the upper and lower stretches are good options, depending on the day. Cloudy days are better than bright sunny ones. Look for goldens, sallies and pmds to be the bugs of choice. Both the upper and lower streches will likely fish pretty well with droppers too.

Sept 31st - Thanks to everyone who came out for the memorial, it was great to see everybody and see so much support.

The past few days have been very cold for the time of year, and the fish don't seem to be overly active as a result. Stick to mornings and evenings if you plan on going out. I have seen the first few signs of the Baetis; they tend to thrive in this overcast, rainy weather. Nymphs and streamers are probably going to be the best bet in the middle of the day, and the upper stretches are fishing better than the lower section. That's going to change as soon as the big brown trout start spawning up from the Clark Fork, but that is likely a couple weeks away.

Orange and olive will become more and more predominant as we move into September. According to the weather report, things should start to warm up again by Thursday or Friday, so hopefully the fishing will pick up with the warmer temperatures at that time. More in a day or two...

The following Fishing Report is provided by Headhunters Fly Shop in Craig.

September 1 and therefore 1 month closer to fabulous dry fly fishing.

Until then, nymphing is the game.

According to the gaggle of guides that just traipsed through the hallowed doors of Headhunters…the WHITEFISH bite was on today.

A significant drop in the old barometer will sometimes make the river fish as though there is not a single trout in the resource. You would think there had been a chemical spill upstream, that specifically targeted the wily trout. And when the trout do bite the fly, they run so hard and fast that the tippet strength has no correlation in landing rates.

The most common phrase of a Missouri River guide, “Let ‘em run, let ‘em run, let ‘em run. No, he did not spit it. I’ll tie on new flies now.”

These fish are strong! Steroid strong, as a client of mine recently said. There were some expletives thrown in for good measure.

Flies of the Day included: Little Green Machine, Red Headed Step Child, Rainbow Warrior, Rainbow Czech, blah, blah, any small PT like a green lightening bug, Craven’s Ju-Ju Baetis, Morrish’s Anato-May olive, Kyle’s C-N Superflash PT, Bubbleback Baetis…all in 16-20.

Hoppers were looked at but not often eaten. A few, said the guides, not a lot.

Try something other than a traditional hopper. Try PMX’s, beetles, ants, anything goofy looking in your attractor box. Even a Stimulator can be effective.

September is here and so is our most productive nymphing month. Hardcore nymphing client come out and are tuned into the bobber.

A classic freestone river in one of the most beautiful settings on earth. The Creek cuts it's way through narrow canyon walls and big timber stands until it empties in the upper Clark Fork twenty-four miles east of Missoula. Its Blue Ribbon water and prolific hatches have gained notoriety throughout the angling world. Undoubtedly, Rock Creek is an angler's best chance to catch Western Montana's Grand Slam; Rainbows, Browns, Cut Throats, and Brook Trout all in a day.

Skwalas and Grey Drakes (April - May): This is a sneaky hatch that only a few anglers chase on the Creek. You'll have the river to yourself along with a bunch of very hungry Montana trout searching for those olive stoneflies and the smoky wings of big mayflies.
Salmonflies and Goldens (May - June): This is it - Primetime! Rock Creek is a stonefly making machine, and when they come it is mini helicopters crashing the water and forcing trout to a feast on top. There is really no experience like this in the West that we know of.
