The next several days should provide us some great dry fly fishing. The cloud cover and mild temps should help bring out both hatches and fish. 4x tippet is the common play with Hoppers and Hecuba, 5x will do just fine for the smaller bugs. Look at the inside of the turns too as more fish are stacking into the Mayfly water.

The fish feeding on top this time of year can be very subtle, a smaller dimple on the surface of the water could be a giant fish. That said, be easy on your hook sets especially when you are fishing the smaller Trico patterns with light tippets! For Terrestrials we like using Ants, Beetles and Hoppers.

As with the other area waters, the Blackfoot should fish real well on top this week. Look for Mayfly hatches to increase. Look to fish the softer seams and tail outs.

Try Fishing Terrestrials....Ants, Beetles and Hoppers!

The next few days will be great for fishing the Upper and Lower Clarkfork. Cloud cover and mild temps will keep fish looking up for you. Try dropper fishing in the morning until around 11 or so, then push the dries.

Both the upper and lower stretches are good options, depending on the day. Cloudy days are better than bright sunny ones. Look for goldens, sallies and pmds to be the bugs of choice. Both the upper and lower streches will likely fish pretty well with droppers too.

The following Rock Creek Fishing Report is brought to you by the Rock Creek Mercantile.

September 2nd - Fall weather really seemed to arrive quickly this year. This weekend is supposed to be decent and in the 70s, but by Sunday it's going to dip back down to the 50s and 60s.

The best patterns right now are varying mayflies and parachute patterns like an Adams or a Purple Haze. The purples in particular are getting the best feedback, so stock up on them. Depending on the weather patterns, we also have a variety of Mahoganies, Yellow PMDs, and baetis. I haven't heard of any October caddis flying yet, but their nymph counterpart, the orange Serendipity, is doing well. Streamers are also effective. Stick to basic colors like black, brown, and olive. Very soon, we will be getting those large browns spawning up from the Clark Fork, and that's when the lower section of Rock Creek will come alive.

The following Fishing Report is provided by Headhunters Fly Shop in Craig.

September 1 and therefore 1 month closer to fabulous dry fly fishing.

Until then, nymphing is the game.

According to the gaggle of guides that just traipsed through the hallowed doors of Headhunters…the WHITEFISH bite was on today.

A significant drop in the old barometer will sometimes make the river fish as though there is not a single trout in the resource. You would think there had been a chemical spill upstream, that specifically targeted the wily trout. And when the trout do bite the fly, they run so hard and fast that the tippet strength has no correlation in landing rates.

The most common phrase of a Missouri River guide, “Let ‘em run, let ‘em run, let ‘em run. No, he did not spit it. I’ll tie on new flies now.”

These fish are strong! Steroid strong, as a client of mine recently said. There were some expletives thrown in for good measure.

Flies of the Day included: Little Green Machine, Red Headed Step Child, Rainbow Warrior, Rainbow Czech, blah, blah, any small PT like a green lightening bug, Craven’s Ju-Ju Baetis, Morrish’s Anato-May olive, Kyle’s C-N Superflash PT, Bubbleback Baetis…all in 16-20.

Hoppers were looked at but not often eaten. A few, said the guides, not a lot.

Try something other than a traditional hopper. Try PMX’s, beetles, ants, anything goofy looking in your attractor box. Even a Stimulator can be effective.

September is here and so is our most productive nymphing month. Hardcore nymphing client come out and are tuned into the bobber.
