“…the trout is shy and sophisticated. To overcome his sophistication,
we must study his habits carefully. His biggest advantage is
selectivity, and we can counteract it only by knowing the insects that
make up his diet. This is the reason for the study of stream
entomology by the angler….Stream tactics can be learned by experience,
but stream entomology can be learned only by serious study….The insect
population on our better streams is sufficient to sustain even the
largest fish. Research has shown that the immature stages of
stream insects are so numerous that each acre of bottom conceals
about 100 pounds of nymphs and larvae. Particularly rich streams
have as much as 200 pounds per acre of bottom.” - E. G. Schwiebert, Jr.
