Blackfoot River

The "Big Blackfoot" is a headhunters dream. Early and late in the year its 80 miles of deep boulder strewn runs make this an unbelievable location for anyone who enjoys pitching streamers to over-aggressive, large trout. During the heart of the western montana fly fishing season this fabulous fishery's bottomless glacier green pools and shallow running riffles create incredible habitat for the big browns, rainbows, and wild native cutts who are willing to come to eat large attractors all day long.
  • Salmonfly (June-July): No other hatch gets them going like this one. Fish you only see once a year show up to feed on top. A size-4 orange cigar butt is too much to resist when the real thing is crashing all over the water.
  • Golden Stones (July): Another big meal. Doesn't have quite the same power as salmonflies, but still pretty impressive for numbers of fish.
  • PMDs and Hoppers ( August-September): Some fish are still willing to move hard and fast for twitching hopper and some fish sipping in the back-eddys.
  • Fall Streamer Fishing: The feeding time is getting short and winter is closing in; a size-2 double bunny would go a long way in a big brownie's diet.
