Same.... today as yesterday....Dry flies and rising fish, life is good.

The next several days should provide us some great dry fly fishing. The cloud cover and mild temps should help bring out both hatches and fish. 4x tippet is the common play with Hoppers and Hecuba, 5x will do just fine for the smaller bugs. Look at the inside of the turns too as more fish are stacking into the Mayfly water.

The fish feeding on top this time of year can be very subtle, a smaller dimple on the surface of the water could be a giant fish. That said, be easy on your hook sets especially when you are fishing the smaller Trico patterns with light tippets! For Terrestrials we like using Ants, Beetles and Hoppers.

Same today as yesterday....dry flies and rising fish = good times!

As with the other area waters, the Blackfoot should fish real well on top this week. Look for Mayfly hatches to increase. Look to fish the softer seams and tail outs.

Same as the last few, rising fish and dry flies........life is good!!

The next few days will be great for fishing the Upper and Lower Clarkfork. Cloud cover and mild temps will keep fish looking up for you. Try dropper fishing in the morning until around 11 or so, then push the dries.

Both the upper and lower stretches are good options, depending on the day. Cloudy days are better than bright sunny ones. Look for goldens, sallies and pmds to be the bugs of choice. Both the upper and lower streches will likely fish pretty well with droppers too.

Hatches: Giant Golden Stones, Ants, Hoppers

The following Rock Creek Fishing Report is brought to you by the Rock Creek Mercantile.

September 7th - We are definitely in a quick transition to fall fishing. Though grasshoppers are still working here and there, it has become too cold for them for the most part. Still, if you see them jumping around give them a try.

On Labor Day, I decided to head to the Morgan Case Homestead about 30 miles upstream. I started with a couple hoppers and pulled out a few small browns. Then I switched to the size 8 orange serendipity, made popular by Doug. Fish would not leave it alone throughout the day. It has definitely become the premier nymph, and will likely remain that way into October. If you fish only one pattern, that's easily the one I'd recommend.

We've also seen the first of the October Caddis. Carolyn found one flying around in her house last night, and it's currently sitting in a cup here in the Merc. Fish these guys in the evening and you should get rises. The other patterns that are out and about right now consist of baetis and mahoganies. The Purple Haze also remains a deadly dry fly right now. Fishing is getting very good! More later as things develop...

When the angler daydreams of a classic trout river, this is what they picture, braided river channels, huge undercut banks, a variety of insect hatches, and willing top water trout. The Bitterroot offers all these things on a river big enough for floating, yet not overwhelming to the accomplished wade fisherman. The splendor and diversity of this Rocky Mountain trout paradise allows anglers to experience world class dry fly fishing almost all year long.

Skwalas (March-April): This is the first big bug hatch of the year. The fish are coming off the winter fast and are looking for meat.
Salmon Flies, Goldens andGreen Drakes (June-July): The fish have been treading the heavy water and dirt of runoff, and are on the feed. A size 4 gaint stone or a monster mayfly is too much to resist.
Hoppers (August-September): No fish can resist a size 6 hopper slapped down tight to the bank.
Mahoganies and Beatis (September-October): One of the finest times to be on this water. Classic riffle, run, pool provides anglers with so many rising beaks that you either come home tastefully frustrated or a complete hero.
