We have permit the year around, and the fishing ranges from good to great. Weather is probably the biggest "if" in permit fishing, but the permit are always here.  If you want to combine a permit fishing trip with tarpon or bonefish, for a Grand Slam, or just for pure enjoyment, then the months from April through September are best.

Permit are a finicky fish.  If the permit has a weakness, and they do, it's crabs. Permit will feed on shrimp, clams, sea urchins and lobsters, but their favorite food are crabs.  The permit and the crab go together like salt and pepper, or bread and butter.  Artificial lures should resemble crabs, and even the best tied flies, or manufactured lure will be ignored completely at times.  As mentioned, they're a finicky fish.  Placenica's blessing is the number of permit you will see on the flats in a days angling, even with that, perseverance is a great attribute in permit fishing.

I enjoy permit fishing whether it's with a fly rod, or spinning tackle, as long as  the end result is a guest with the realization of enjoyment and satisfaction, because that's what this is all about.

Tarpon, may be one of the most awe inspiring fish that swims; and the most exasperating.  They can be caught on a variety of flies, lures and bait.  At times they're slamming about anything that hits the water, and right when you think you have it figured out they snub every offering presented while surfacing and rolling all around your boat. When hooked the tarpon puts on an unbelievable aerial display followed by line sizzling runs, however, the keyword here is "hooked".
Most tarpon anglers ask how many you "jumped" in a day rather than how many caught. Getting a hook into a tarpon is an art in itself, playing the tarpon on light tackle, as with fly fishing or Boat
