Well, even the smoke has become spotty these days. It is blanketing mostly the upper Bitterroot. The smoke provides great solar insulation one day, and is gone the next. It seems the smoke hangs up in spots as much as the elusive clouds. However, the water is substantially cooler and the bugs are rolling. Trico eaters were rising until almost 1:00 yesterday, and purple attractors were all you needed to throw them. I only changed bugs once yesterday, and that was because the one we were fishing was so chewed up. Fishing is great, the rivers are quiet, and I am happy to not be on the weedy Missouri anymore (Craig,MT makes my liver ache). This shot is from Wednesday Morning on the MO.
Hecubas are out in the right spot/time and Mahoganies/BWOs are around the corner. Don’t overlook the mid-river fish; toss that big bug right down the gut. I for one will be on solid ground tomorrow, coaxing unfit legs up the Mountain in search of Dinner. Have fun out there.
Flies: Bugmeister, Hoppers, BH Trico Spinner, poly wing trico, Clook’s Hecuba Mega Gimp, Purple Haze.
