Even though the heat has continued and we are in between good hatches, the rivers are still producing since the nights are staying cool and keeping the water temps tolerable. Here, Pete, fishing with guide “Stan” Mahoney, shows off a beauty of a Cutthroat that later schools him. (you’ll have to check out the next blog!) Look for the Bitterroot to fish well during the mid-day on the upper river with hoppers. The lower river might be better early with some fish eating the spinner fall etc. then continue with an occasional bigger guy on a hopper during the mid- day. Forget it after 3:00 until the evening fishing. Look for the Trico’s to really start showing on the middle and lower Bitterroot within the next 10 days or so. The West Fork continues to stay cool with the release and is flowing at 320cfs. Darby is at a nice 509cfs with irrigation dropping the river at Bell Xing which is at 289cfs.
